Secrets of the Solent: Intertidal Surveying

26 Mar 2017 10am – 5.30pm

Secrets of the Solent Intertidal Surveying course is an introduction to our marine life and intertidal survey methods to enable you to be confident to conduct surveys in the future.

In a day filled with presentations, field work and discussions you will:

  • Start in the classroom and cover basic shore ecology and threats to biodiversity
  • Take part in an ID session covering different groups of seaweeds, sponges and animals.
  • Be given an overview of the survey methods in the classroom
  • Take a short walk to the beach to conduct a survey, put the skills into practice and ask any questions.

At the end of the course you will have gained confidence in conducting these surveys as a volunteer.  You will also enrich your knowledge of marine and coastal wildlife and conservation work in the Solent and seas around the Isle of Wight.

The survey involves up to 2 ½ hours walking and crouching.

This course is offered at the subsidised rate of £10 as part of the Secrets of the Solent Project which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Learners are welcome to purchase ID guides which will be brought along. For more information about the project please visit
